If you want to know how batik in Africa is made, then you are in the right place.

Because in this article, we have discussed the manufacturing method of African batik. African batik is famous all over the world due to its elegant manufacturing technique (due to the use of waxes).  Without any further delay, let’s begin with our topic.

There are several ways to produce a perfect batik. Generally, two methods are followed. Batik can be made by printing the resist with a stamp (primarily copper) called a cap. The wax that is applied resists dyes and consequently allows the artisan to color selectively by dipping the cloth in a single color, removing the wax along with boiling water. And the process is repeated if multiple colors are required. Also, batik can be made by drawing lines or dots of the resist with a tool called canting.

The above methods described were used to manufacture batik on a commercial scale. If you want to know the batik-making process in a small workshop, then read the steps below:

  1. Take a large basin, and begin to melt the wax.
  2. Crave your desired design onto a block of sponge using any sharp object (for example; a knife)
  3. After engraving the design, dip the sponge block into the burning, melted wax and print it on top of 100% cotton, grey cloth (this process is known as stamping).
  4. Put the fabric into the dye bath to create the focused background color (usually light colors are preferred).
  5. Dry the cloth from the outside in.
  6. Repeat the same process of stamping, dyeing, and desiccating in order to add more prints and vibrant colors to the cloth.
  7. Wax can be removed by dipping the fabric into hot water. After that, hand wash the fabric in chilled water to remove the entire wax from the cloth.
  8. Tada, dry the cloth outside, and you are all done.
